And then the monkey said....

I tried to read Sock. It's by Penn Jillette. The tall, talky one of Penn & Teller. He's done magic for years and books about how to play with things (like food and traffic; don't think dirty), but finally he thought he should write a novel. Narrated by a Sock Monkey. A story about a murder, actually a bunch of murders, killings that shouldn't have happened, but they did, as described by a toy, all from the mind of a guy who lives in Vegas. Viva, Las Vegas...

Whew! That paragraph is how Sock is written; jumpy sentences, telling an odd stream-of-consciousness story, laced with pop reference and song lyrics. It's like having a ADHD friend telling the strangest story they know after downing a dozen Pixie Stix. It wore me out. I'm not saying it's a bad book, I just didn't enjoy the reading of it. I'd recently finished
Going Postal and Jumping Off The Planet, both well-crafted works of prose, and neither the first novel published by their authors. So Sock had a tough act to follow. Still, I don't think I'd have liked it much in any case, even though it is narrated by a monkey.
