This Year's Word: Prolific

I'm sure others have written about this, but I was recently thinking about a post by Christina Katz about choosing a watchword for the year (an idea she got from Ali Edwards). The word is the theme for one's year, a reminder of the direction one wants to go. Ali's word for 2010 is "story," Christina's is "prosper." These are significant to where they are and what they're trying to accomplish this year.

I've thought a lot about the difference between where I am now and where I want to be. The things I'd like in the "To Be" category include being recognized in the genre fiction community as a talented writer, have a large and enthusiastic fan base, and be invited to participate in conventions and other events as a featured guest. These aren't unreasonable goals, but they're all external. I need other people to make them happen. So the logical question is, "what do I need to do to inspire others to do these things?"

Simply put, I need to write stories that garner attention and get them out there for people to see. So Step #1 of that is Produce Material. Along with the scheduled comics for the year, I want to write some comic books, short stories, and perhaps a screenplay, as well as finishing my 2005 NaNo novel. So my watchword for 2010 is "Prolific."

I'll have less free time this year than I did last year, so I want to learn how to write faster. I want a better set of tools for figuring out what comes next in a story, and for avoiding procrastination behaviors. As the year progresses, I'll try to report on what I learn and whether I feel like I'm getting better at these things, as well as what projects I bring to completion.

So, let's see what I get finished this year!
