Catching Up: Wed, May 2nd. Sickness & Scalzi
I’m mentioned before that when I’m sick, I expect Recovery By Schedule. I decide that I am allowed to be ill for forty-eight hours, but then I must be functional again. Of course, this is as effective as ordering a cat to do the vacuuming while you’re at work (I mean, you have to watch them every second
while they’re vacuuming, or they’ll just wander off to stare out the window, so you might as well just do it yourself, which is what I think they’re counting on). I not only had to go to work while I was still sick, but there was a reading by John Scalzi in Beaverton
on Wednesday night. I probably would have been better served by going to bed early, but I wanted to go. Plus, sanguinity
offered to drive, and it gave me a chance to visit with her and grrlpup
(and of course, see MaryRobinetteKowal
and her friends). So I went.
It was fun! I haven’t read much of Scalzi’s work (I mostly know him from his taping bacon to his cat
), but I’m told his style would probably appeal to me. He read the first chapter from an upcoming novel, and I get the feeling that there’s a lot of overlap in our senses of humor. I’ve decided that he and I could be good Mortal Enemies. Not that he and I have any actual conflict, but it’s great publicity to have a Nemesis. We’d casually mention our Enduring Feud during interviews and play it up during discussion panels. Not that we’d actually argue or stage fake confrontations (like Andy Kaufman used to do); we’d be very Gentlemanly Adversaries.
It’s just that Drama gets attention, and his SWFA Presidency kerfuffle won’t last forever. Current Mood: thoughtful
