I once saw a video clip of a teenage girl having a tantrum about how it was her birthday
, and therefore her friends had to do whatever she wanted!
It made me want to slap some sense into her parents. Don’t get me wrong; I think birthday parties are great! I like that everyone gets one day a year to be celebrated, to be the Guest of Honor. And if people want to cater to your whims, so much the better. But I think it’s a disservice to a child for parents to indulge them so much on a day-to-day basis that in order for a birthday celebration to seem special they have to make Little Suzie the Absolute Monarch For A Day. I believe one of the roles of parents is to prepare children for those moments when the Rosy Sheen of Innocent Youth meets the Industrial Sandblaster of Reality, not to make that abrasive blast even worse.
With that said, I’m having a very good birthday! It’s low-key. I’m at work while my parents and sister entertain themselves, but we’ll all gather later for a small celebration. I know a lot of you have been wondering whether there will be a Virtual Birthday Party, and the answer is YES! But not today. I figured that it’s my party and I can postpone it if I want to, so I’m scheduling it for Sunday, June 25th, in the afternoon. I’m thinking of using AIM this year, instead of Chatzy, but details will be published later. So if you’re reading this, you’re invited! Current Mood: cheerful
