All On My Own, For the Greater Good...
Yesterday, there were no customers in the store. NONE. Aside from three phone calls and a guy sticking his head in the door to ask "Did someone just come in here? No? OK," I was by myself all day. It was GREAT!
I realize that a store without customers becomes merely an underutilized museum, and is not really a satisfying commercial venture. Fortunately we get a fair bit of business on the Internet, so I spent the day fulfilling online orders, and working through a stack of incoming books, pricing, entering into inventory, and shelving them. I've also been trying to spend part of each day organizing sections of the shelves. I'm not grouping books by color (tempting as that is), but I think having neatly-arranged shelves makes for better feng shui
. And that makes my time there more pleasant, even if no actual customers see it.
I know, somewhere along the line I swore that as God was my witness, I'd never work retail again. Of course, without in-store customers, this is the least like a retail job one can have, and have it still technically be a retail job. And I'm helping R, the owner. And making some money. So it's worth it (that's my rationalization, and I'm sticking to it)! Current Mood: pleased
