Numbers and Counters and Stats!

You know how I'm easily distracted by Bright Shiny Objects? Today's BSO was Webstats. It didn't really take me that long to set up the entire Ask Dr. Eldritch site with the code to do counts for each webpage. Once the numbers started coming in, it was hard not to keep looking at them, and see what the counters could tell me. For one thing, they can identify country of origin. Most hits are from the US, but I had readers today from Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Denmark and the Ukraine. A couple people read the entire comic archive. According to these stats, 86 people visited my website today.

The annoying thing is that the free version only carries information on the last 100 page loads, so when someone reads the entire archive, all that's in the log is one hit on each page. So I am naturally tempted to upgrade to a larger log. How much do I really need, though? Sure it's fun to see where my readers are, but are more detailed stats going to pay for themselves, or merely be an amusing toy? It might be worth paying for the larger capacity, because the alternative is to check the stats every hour or so and see what the latest 100 pageloads were. I would NEVER get anything done.
